High School Golf Star Breaks TPC Las Vegas Record

May 18th, 2012

LAS VEGAS – Growing up playing golf, Coronado High School senior A.J. McInerney always thought a 62 was possible. It would just be a different kind of 62.

“Well, I knew I’d shoot 62 – just maybe not finish 18 holes yet,” he said.

Monday at TPC Las Vegas, McInerney was on his way to winning the 4-A state tourney. The Coronado senior, who is the third-ranked junior golfer in the country, strung together seven birdies and an eagle on his way to an 18-hole 62.

“It was a pretty special day, played holes four through eight six under,” he said.

“Obviously, when you make the turn in 30, you’ve got a chance to have a pretty special round,” said Coronado High School golf coach Joe Sawaia.

“On eighteen, I knew what the record was and was able to hit it to about eight feet and able to make it, so it was pretty cool,” McInerney said.

“It’s a state tournament and the pressure situation involved, that makes it more special than the number,” Sawaia added.

The nine-under score not only set a new Nevada record, but also broke the blue tees course record of 63 at TPC Las Vegas. That record was held by former UNLV Rebel and PGA Tour pro Charley Hoffman.

“I don’t think TPC Las Vegas was too happy about it, but it was pretty fun,” McInerney said. “It’s a lot better to see Charley Hoffman’s name on there than some high school kid, but it is what it is I guess.”

“I think it’s pretty cool to see some local Las Vegas kid playing great golf in Las Vegas,” Hoffman said. “It’s pretty cool to see the young guys come up and beat me.”

This young guy will be playing at UNLV next year, which means he’ll soon have an opportunity to meet Hoffman in person. When that conversation happens, McInerney says he’ll have a lighthearted message for the former Rebel.

“Tell him he needs to play better,” he joked.

Unions Encouraged To Bargain

May 18th, 2012

As North Las Vegas sent out the first round of pink slips to workers Thursday, Mayor Shari Buck wrote letters to the city’s four unions urging them to return to the bargaining table to avoid layoffs.

“We stand by our pledge to work with you in good faith, with accurate information and to do so under complete transparency so the citizens of our City know we are being good stewards of their tax dollars,” she wrote.

The mayor commended the Police Supervisors Association and Teamsters Local 14 for publicly saying they were willing to negotiate with city management. She urged the other two unions, which represent firefighters and rank-and-file police, to sit down with City Manager Tim Hacker and find a solution that will help balance the budget while “avoiding mass layoffs and keeping the City safe and our residents served.”

The city must make up a
$33 million deficit in the
$123 million budget for the coming fiscal year and has proposed hundreds of employee layoffs to help meet that goal. If the city can’t reach new union agreements by July 1, it would lay off 100 police employees, 57 fire employees and 60 members of the Teamsters, who represent about 500 general city employees.

North Las Vegas employs about 1,400 people.

The first 15 layoff notices went to members of the Teamsters Thursday, and more are planned next week.

The city must submit its final budget to the state Department of Taxation by June 1.

City management has asked its public safety unions to accept a number of concessions, including a two-year pay freeze, a moratorium on uniform allowances and an end to a program that allows employees to sell back unused holiday and sick time. The savings would total $9.8 million.

The mayor’s letter surprised Jeff Hurley, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1607. “I’m not quite sure what that was about,” he said.

His union agreed in principle earlier this month to the city’s financial requests, he said. But the agreement came with the requirement that North Las Vegas consolidate its fire service with another local government, such as Las Vegas or Clark County.

North Las Vegas fire officials have been in discussions with their Las Vegas counterparts to share services, he said.

Hurley questioned the city’s deficit because the budget includes a number of empty positions, including 28 from the fire department. Those 28 positions account for $3.1 million, he said.

Adding the vacant positions artificially inflates the budget, he said.

He also noted that the firefighters union has conceded $20 million in pay and benefits over the past four years.

“We’ve never shied away from doing what’s right,” Hurley said.

Police union President Mike Yarter shared Hurley’s concerns with the city’s numbers, pointing out how the budget deficit climbed from $15 million to
$33 million in less than a month. A chunk of that came from the 85 vacant positions the city has on the books, he said.

Yarter said he has not declined to negotiate with city management, but he won’t sit down to talk until after the final budget goes to the state on June 1. Only then will he know what the city’s real budget deficit is, he said.

“It’s a moving target,” Yarter said. “I really don’t know what the number is at this point.”

North Las Vegas slashes budget, clearing way for 200 layoffs

North Las Vegas Mayor Shari Buck at City Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011.

Emotions were high during a special meeting Tuesday night as the North Las Vegas City Council approved a budget that would call for about 200 police, firefighters and Teamsters Union members to lose jobs if concession agreements aren’t made.

“We are going to balance our budget, we’re going to live within our means and it hurts,” Mayor Shari Buck said. “We’re going to vote on unfortunately passing out pink slips if it comes to that.”

The mayor and four city council members voted unanimously to proceed with a budget due on June 1. The budget without concessions would include more than 200 layoffs.

An estimated 57 firefighters, 100 city police department employees and about 60 additional city workers would get pink slips in the next two weeks if concession agreements with four union groups aren’t settled.

“There’s not one city council member up here who wants to lay anybody off,” said the mayor, in an emotional tone. “You lay off a person, you lay off a family.”

North Las Vegas leaders say a down economy, high foreclosures and unemployment rates have all caused revenue streams, such as property taxes, to dry up — leaving the city with a $33 million budget gap for the 2012-13 fiscal year, which ends June 30, 2013.

“It’ll be a crawl, not a sprint, to recovery,” said City Manager Tim Hacker.

The city is asking for a two-year freeze on annual raises, which includes no merit-based raises or cost of living increases. The concessions would also abolish a program that enables employees to sell back their holiday time, putting a stop to uniform allowances and asking administrators to maximize efficiencies.

So far the unions have not accepted the agreements.

“There seems to be no plan after four years of concessions,” said Leonard Cardinale, president of the North Las Vegas Supervisors Association, whose organization is still in talks with the city.

The local Teamsters Union members have voted against the proposed concessions. The International Association of Firefighters Local 1607 did not meet a consensus and asked for the city to consolidate their department into any other nearby fire departments. The North Las Vegas Police Officers Association also lacked a consensus.

“It’s up to our employees,” the mayor said. “I think what we’re asking for is reasonable.”

Union leaders were disappointed with the council’s decision.

Mike Yarter, president of the North Las Vegas Police Officers Association said, “They’re defrauding taxpayers of North Las Vegas.”

Yarter, a detective of the North Las Vegas Police Department said there are positions that the city is budgeting for that have been empty since July 2011. Positions he said aren’t intended to be filled.

“Whatever the concessions they’re asking for don’t even come close to the $33 million,” Yarter said.

During the special meeting, other cuts to the city’s budget were expressed including cuts to North Las Vegas Library fund and the SafeKey fund, which supports an after-school program for children.

Sick of Working? Your Doctor May Have the Cure

May 16th, 2012

LAS VEGAS, May 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — A landmark summer research study has unveiled a vital component of wellness and happiness…vacations. The survey, “The Takeaways from Getaways,” commissioned by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, draws attention to the serious physical and emotional implications of stress and feeling over worked, and the inextricable link between vacation and personal wellness and happiness.

To view the multimedia assets associated with this release, please click: http://www.multivu.com/mnr/56160-the-takeaways-from-getaways-visit-las-vegas-lvcva

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120516/MM00481 )

The research revealed surprisingly that more than 9 out of 10 Americans reported feeling happier after taking a vacation. And seventy-seven percent (77%) believed that their overall health improves after a getaway. Even so, more than half of Americans admitted that doctors should be able to prescribe vacations as a curative and therapeutic option for stress-related maladies.

To view the complete summer research, and discover more interesting vacation findings, visit the “Takeaways from Getaways” colorful interactive landing page at

http://www.visitlasvegas.com/vacationstudy/

“Vacations will greatly improve your quality of life,” said Dr. Ian Smith, health and wellness expert, member of The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition; and author of New York Times Bestsellers, The Fat Smash Diet, The 4 Day Diet, Happy and his latest book, The Truth About Men.  “Americans are always on the go and that rapid pace has serious effects on the deterioration of the mind and body. I hope the findings of this research inspire Americans to take their wellbeing into their own hands and take the time to get away.”

But despite the overwhelming consensus of the holistic and therapeutic benefits of getaways, Americans are slow to take them and the amount of unused vacation time-off is approaching epidemic levels. Startling, the survey exposed over half of employed Americans have either lost, or know someone who has lost unused vacation time-off from work. Why are American workers stockpiling their vacation days? Surprisingly, the economic times are not a reason time off is being put off. Eighty-two percent (82%) of survey participants report vacations are equally, if not more important in tough economic times.

More interesting takeaways from getaways include….

  • Americans are more connected to memories than mementos: For eighty-two percent (82%) of participants, their happiest life moments came from vacation experiences.
  • Sabbaticals are radical for your well-being:  Almost six out of ten (59%) employed Americans believe that losing paid vacation time decreases a person’s well-being.

The research, conducted by the Washington, DC area firm, Heart+Mind Strategies, surveyed 1,000 U.S. residents by phone between the ages of 21-74 who have taken at least one overnight trip for vacation or pleasure in the last 12 months. The margin of error is +/-3.1 at the 95% confidence level.

SkyBridge Alternatives conference, set to return next year, gives coveted industry presence in Las Vegas

May 14th, 2012

Mayor Oscar Goodman is interviewed by CNBC anchor Maria Bartiromo during a location broadcast at the SkyBridge Alternatives Conference Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Bellagio.

Former Mayor Oscar Goodman was in his element last week, taking the stage at a major financial services industry conference, martini in hand and showgirls on each arm.

Goodman, in his role as the chairman of the Las Vegas Host Committee, delivered a key to the city to Anthony Scaramucci, managing partner of SkyBridge Capital, which has produced the SkyBridge Alternatives (SALT) conference in Las Vegas the past four years and is coming back again next year.

Scaramucci was genuinely surprised when Goodman strutted on stage since the presentation wasn’t on the SALT program.

“We just wanted to welcome you here and thank you for coming,” Goodman said before a crowd of more than 1,000 that was starting to gather in anticipation of hearing an address from former Vice President Al Gore.

For about three minutes, Goodman was Santa Claus in a three-piece suit, spreading good cheer and happy memories about Las Vegas for a group in an industry the city has long coveted.

SkyBridge, a research-driven investment firm with $6.2 billion in assets, was founded in 2005, and the SALT conference was born in the midst of the recession in 2009. The event incorporates debates on macro-economic trends, geopolitical events and alternative investment opportunities within the context of a dynamic global economy.

Over the years, the conference, presented at Bellagio, has had some heavy hitters speaking. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, Republican Party presidential front-runner Mitt Romney, former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and former Defense Secretary Colin Powell have taken the SALT stage. This year, Gore was joined by former Defense Secretary Robert Gates and 2008 vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin as conference speakers.

The first conference had 500 in attendance; this year’s event sold out in February at 2,000 tickets.

Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority convention sales executive John Schreiber has worked with SkyBridge partner Victor Oviedo since the event was first scheduled in Las Vegas.

“We sat down and talked about how he could surprise his boss with something light between speakers,” Schreiber said.

The hope is that the money managers attending the event not only would remember the impressive speakers but that they had a good time.

“When participants go home and somebody asks, ‘Why did you do this in Vegas?’ we want them to say, ‘Because Vegas appreciates us,’” Schreiber said.

Chris Meyer, vice president of sales for the LVCVA, said the organization is paying extra attention to the event because it represents a business sector of which the city wants to see more.

“The organizers of this event are big proponents of face-to-face business contact and meetings,” Meyer said. “And that’s the exact message we try to present, that we’re all business during the day, but we can have fun at night.”

Oviedo, the primary SALT organizer, is a Las Vegas fan.

“When you look objectively at Las Vegas, it’s an ideal place to hold an event or conference,” Oviedo said. “We’re having this at the premier conference and hotel facility in the world.”

Oviedo said the shared Las Vegas experience is conducive to conducting business.

“When you meet someone for the first time and you want to follow up on that relationship, if you come at them with a pitch, they’re less likely to take the phone call,” Oviedo said. “But if you call when you get back to New York and say, ‘Hey, remember at the conference when we sat down and had that conversation?’ and you have that shared experience, you’re more likely to maintain that relationship and build beyond the event.”

And if you think these executives are in search of wild and crazy times because what happens here stays here, think again. SkyBridge brought the entertainment to attendees.

One night, the company hired Maroon 5 to perform a private concert to kick off a nonprofit philanthropic initiative called the Aspire Giving Foundation.

Another night, there was a poolside event called “Under the Stars at the Feast of San Gennaro” with samplings of Italian food offered by Bellagio’s chefs.

Oviedo said SALT has been a big success and he’ll go to bat to recommend Las Vegas for industry conferences.

And if the former mayor and his showgirls can persuade one more financial organization to meet here, the effort will be worthwhile.

Las Vegas, the home of championship hockey? Wranglers out to make it happen

May 14th, 2012

Image

Stephen R. Sylvanie

Alaska winger Scott Howes keeps the puck away from Wranglers defenseman Channing Boe during game one of the ECHL Western Conference Finals in April. The Wranglers will be vying for their first Kelly Cup Monday, May 14, 2012, as they meet the Eastern Conference champion Florida Everblades.

Monday, May 14, 2012 | 2 a.m.

They started their season playing what was touted as “The Last Hockey Game on Earth,” a tongue-in-cheek promotion spoofing a Christian broadcaster’s prediction of the apocalypse.

Seven months later, the Las Vegas Wranglers are still competing, with one series left in their bid to be the last hockey team left standing in the ECHL.

The Wranglers will be vying for their first Kelly Cup as they meet the Eastern Conference champion Florida Everblades at 7:05 p.m. Monday at the Orleans Arena. For Wranglers president Billy Johnson, whose gonzo marketing approach led not only to this year’s “Rapture Night” opener but promotions lampooning Dick Cheney and former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, the possibility of bringing the cup to Las Vegas is a serious matter.

“It’s a big deal,” he said. “The only thing we have ever strived for is to add to our community in some way that’s meaningful.

“As you know with our history, we have always put that in the entertainment fabric of what we do. Something that people can laugh at and show some personality. But the ultimate goal has always been to win a championship. A championship would be a nice contribution to the community.”

Las Vegas advanced to the championship round with a 4-1 series victory over the reigning league champion Alaska Aces in the Western Conference Finals.

After dropping Game 1 at home, the Wranglers won four consecutive games — including three in Anchorage — to capture their second Bruce Taylor Trophy.

The Everblades advanced to the Kelly Cup championship with a 4-1 series win over the defending Eastern Conference champion Kalamazoo Wings.

Florida scored 21 goals in the conference championship series, an average of more than four goals a game. The Everblades are led on offense by center Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll and forward Brayden Irwin, who have combined to score 28 points in the playoffs.

“They’re a very offensive team that wants to make it a type of track meet,” Wranglers head coach Ryan Mougenel said. “We have to do a good job managing the puck. I think that will be one of the biggest keys. We also have to make good decisions in the offensive end and embrace our team speed.”

Wranglers forwards Eric Lampe and Adam Miller, known as two of the fastest skaters in the league, will look to utilize their speed to the team’s advantage. Lampe is tied with Lalonde-McNicoll for most league playoff points with 16, while Adam Miller is tied for third with 13.

At Wednesday’s media day, Lampe acknowledged the team was feeling confident after beating Alaska but was mindful that the squad’s ultimate goal lies ahead.

“Our confidence is high right now but we have to keep it even keel,” he said. “We’ve got one more series to go. We beat the defending champions and that meant a lot to us winning the Western Conferences Finals. But the main goal all season has been to bring the Kelly Cup here.”

Last week, the Clark County Commission did its part to boost the team by announcing it would recognize the Wranglers at its meeting Tuesday. The commission also will designate May 15 as “Las Vegas Wranglers Day.”

“We’re excited that our fans are behind us and the city is behind us,” Miller said. “It’s nice to see billboards about our team around the city. We hope everyone comes out and supports us as we attempt to bring a championship home to Vegas.”

The team will receive a proclamation for providing family-friendly and affordable entertainment to residents and visitors, and for the team’s ongoing community service efforts near the start of the Commission’s 9:15 a.m. meeting, which is held in Commission Chambers at the County Government Center, located at 500 S. Grand Center Parkway.

The Wranglers have provided nearly $400,000 in charitable contributions to the community during the 2011-2012 season.

Playoff tickets are on sale now and can be purchased through the Wranglers front office at 702- 471-PUCK. Fans can lock in their seats by purchasing playoff strip tickets starting at $18 per game, and tickets for kids ages 12 and under are $8. Individual Wranglers playoff tickets are available by phone at 702-284-7777, and can be purchased in person at all Coast Casino properties, Town Square shopping center or www.orleansarena.com.
